The main activity of the Foundation is the creation of a global network of microfinance institutions (MFIs). To achieve this, the BBVA Microfinance Foundation works with MFIs that already exist or takes up majority shareholdings in new ones. The aim is to ensure that all the institutions perform their business properly.
This is a powerful partnership in which Network institutions retain their own identity and are responsible for their management. The purpose of the Foundation is to reinforce its structure and operation to extend its services to more underprivileged persons and under better conditions, retaining the identity and singularity of the member institutions, as well as full interdependence in the local setting in which they operate.
The ultimate purpose of the entire procedure is to build an integrated and consistent network of organizations that work together for a common purpose: To extend as far as possible the benefits of microfinances among the population with the lowest income.
The Network has a common corporate culture, a system of corporate governance and compliance and a shared technological platform. However, each institution maintains its own identity.
Elsewhere, the BBVA Microfinance Foundation works to ensure that all Network members not only enjoy the synergies and opportunities stemming from collaboration with other institutions sharing the same mission, but also provides them with support for strengthening this. The Foundation therefore provides member MFIs with an operating environment; with coordination and support in technology, the risk management system, organizational structures and commercial policies; with greater capacity for liaising with regulators; and with joint information, social impact and performance assessment systems.
